The Advantages of AMSCO Cast Manganese Steel The Toughest Steel Known

No better casting alloy has ever been developed for high impact service. Cast manganese steel has unique properties that cannot be achieved with rolled manganese steel or by low alloys in cast or wrought form. In fact, it has been said that modern scrap shredders could not exist today were it not for cast manganese steel. As an AMSCO manganese steel casting goes into service, it is extremely tough throughout, with very high impact and elongation properties. However, a new manganese steel casting is not hard the surface of a new heat treated casting is about 200 Brinell hardness. Once a manganese steel casting goes into service and typically undergoes repeated impact, it cold works or work hardens. The work hardened areas of manganese steel castings can reach hardnesses as high as 600 Brinell, depending on the amount of impact. This work hardening process is self- renewing as long as high impact service continues. Another unique advantage of AMSCO manganese steel castings is that while high impact regions undergo work hardening, the interior of the casting retains its low hardness and high ductility. Thus, the high hardness work hardened surface of the casting is fully supported by the ductile interior of the casting. This provides the necessary toughness to absorb impact without failure. Other advantages in shredder service include: Manganese steel shredder ha mm ers self polish in the pin holes, which minimizes wear on the pin shafts. Low alloy steel ha mm ers, which dont have this characteristic, can cause rapid wear on the pins.

Manganese steel has a very high resistance to crack propagation. If operating conditions cause the yield strength in a region to be exceeded, and if a crack forms, the crack tends to grow very slowly since the i mm ediately- adjacent metal work hardens. Cracks in low alloy steel castings tend to grow rapidly and can lead to quick failure.

No other alloy offers manganese steels combined advantages of a high capacity for work hardening in high impact areas, with high ductility in the remaining parts of the casting. AMSCO Wear Products provides manganese steel castings in numerous grades including standard ASTM designations and precisely controlled proprietary grades tailored to specific applications. Low Alloy Steel Castings from AMSCO Wear ProductsWe provide wear- resistant castings made of several proprietary grades of martensitic, chromium- nickel- molybdenum steels that were developed through decades of AMSCO metallurgical research and development. These castings have an excellent combination of properties including high strength, substantial ductility, and good resistance to abrasive wear. Depending on application and service conditions, our low alloy steel castings can be provided at a medium hardness (nominally 300 brinell) or at a high hardness (nominally 500 brinell) .
