Event Description - 25th Aachener Steel Kolloquium Metal Forming

11 - 12 March 2010

Metal forming is an inherent part of almost all production related process chains for metal processing. From this key position, it has since been able to provide valuable contributions towards solving current global challenges.

New metal forming methods and products require

  • Sustainable solutions for local and global mobility
  • Increased utilisation of regenerative energies from the sun, wind and sea
  • Improvement in plant efficiency
  • Resource-saving manufacturing methods

With these, extensive chances arise for modern metal forming to open up new markets.

Thus, modern power engineering is in need of continuously growing mechanical components of highest quality, and their efficient manufacture can only be realized with new planning methods and innovative metal forming. Highly heat resisting and hardly deformable materials, and functionally graded materials are increasingly employed and can for example, be converted to near-net-shaped units  through open die forging, ring rolling, longitudinal rolling and bending processes.

Lightweight design, with customised semi finished parts and new materials, still offers transportation engineering the potential for weight savings. At this stage, innovative methods for the processing of light metals, composite materials and high-tensile steels already enable new design principles; shark skin surface texturing of sheets could reduce flow resistance  of airplanes and in pipelines in the future.

The challenges - pertaining to production engineering in high wage countries - arising from the global competition, also apply to metal forming. Process- and materials simulation, along the process chain new metal forming processes for individualised production, and an integrative layout of tools and processes with consideration to the interaction between process, tools and machine, may contribute to the advancement of technology.

The 25th ASK will address these and other themes, to decision makers with backgrounds in metal forming as well as in machine- and plant production, energy management and transportation engineering.
